Save Lives this Fourth of July: Never Boat Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs

As boaters nationwide prepare to celebrate Independence Day on the water, the Safe Boating Campaign, a global initiative promoting responsible boating, reminds everyone to prioritize safety – especially by boating sober. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, boating under the influence (BUI) remains a leading contributing factor in recreational boating fatalities.

“As we head into the holiday weekend, we anticipate learning about boating incidents as a direct result of alcohol use. It’s just not worth the risk. Be responsible on the water and enjoy this holiday weekend safely,” said Peg Phillips, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council.

Alcohol and drug use impair judgment, reduce balance, and hinder coordination – dangers that are intensified by environmental factors like sun, wind, and boat movement. Impaired boaters are more likely to fall overboard, get too close to propellers, or capsize small boats by standing or leaning over the side.

To combat this risk, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and law enforcement agencies across the country, is leading Operation Dry Water July 4-6, 2025. This annual nationwide campaign increases BUI awareness and enforcement to help prevent tragedies on the water.

In addition to staying sober, the Safe Boating Campaign encourages boaters to follow these essential safety tips:

  • Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
  • Always use an engine cut-off switch.
  • Check that all safety equipment is present and functional.
  • Share your trip details with a trusted person before heading out.
  • Monitor weather conditions, and be prepared for changes.
  • Follow navigation rules and keep a proper lookout for other boaters.

Let’s make this Fourth of July one to remember for all the right reasons. Stay safe, boat responsibly, and never operate any vessel under the influence!

The Safe Boating Campaign is produced under a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund and administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. For more boating safety tips and to follow the campaign on social media, please visit www.safeboatingcampaign.com.
