Many will be out this fall hunting and fishing. If you’re using a boat to hunt or fish – that makes you a boater! Please obey all boating laws and follow all safe boating or paddling practices.
Here are a few tips to consider:
- Wear It: Wear a life jacket at all times while on the water. Have your canine companion wear one as well.
- Load Properly: Never overload your boat (with too many people or too much gear).
- Take Extra Precautions: Be mindful to avoid falling overboard, capsizing, or swamping. Many incidents occur when a hunter or angler leans over the edge of the boat or suddenly stands up.
- Be Aware: Understand the conditions for hypothermia. Dress in layers for the water temperature (dress for immersion), not the air temperature.
- Check the Weather: Always check the weather before heading out, and assess conditions throughout the day.
- File a Float Plan: Let friends or family back home know where you’re going and when you plan to return.
Enjoy the beauty of the season, and remember: A safe day on the water is a perfect day on the water.
