First responders received a call for a water rescue around 7:48 p.m. A boat, which was about 16 feet long and 6 feet wide, had capsized around 15-20 feet near the breakwater of the marina. Six passengers were clinging to the sides of the boat, Hammond Fire Chief Jeff Smith said. A Hammond firefighter, who was concerned the boaters would not be able to hang onto the craft any longer, hooked himself up to a rope and scaled down the rocky break wall. From there, first responders were able to help pull the people from the water and up over the rocks, Berdine said. “They were very grateful and cold, they had to take off their jackets and layers and we gave them blankets to warm up,” Berdine said. “More than anything, they were fatigued.”
